Trapped in a form of chaos, Delirium is a strikingly common occurrence amongst patients especially the elderly and particularly those with disorders that affect cognition and awareness. The spectrum of delirious symptoms can range from hypoactive delirium causing encephalopathy, stupor and reduced arousal to hyperactive delirium resulting in agitation, hallucinations, erratic behaviour.
I am always reminded of the person that exists within, with a sense of self, sense of identity, trapped in a state of confusion and chaos - desperately searching for an escape. Pushing out against the walls caving in.
