DYSTONIA

18 x 24 in (45 x 60 cm)

Oil on Canvas

This piece is inspired by a patient I took care of in residency with an autoimmune paraneoplastic encephalitis that affects voltage gated potassium (K) channels due to presence of Anti- LGI1 anti-bodies.

The characteristic findings in this encephalitis are refractory seizures that present as dystonic contractures of the face and arm usually unilaterally leading to faciobrachial dystonic seizures (FBDS).

This patient had presented while suffering with upwards of 60 such seizures daily, without any answers from prior providers he had seen. Fortunately we were able to diagnose his condition resulting from a thyroid tumor and he was successfully treated with immunotherapy and gained seizure freedom.

In putting this piece together, I took some inspiration from the cubism style commonly used by the likes of Picasso, often capturing distorted faces and altered human anatomy. Utilizing the block style to combine the letters LGI1 with the disfigured facial and brachial (arm) features.
